The Mtwara Marine Conservation Dashboard, built by Action For Ocean, maps marine conservation data for the Mtwara seascape on Tanzania's southern coast. It covers 987 benthic ecological survey (BES) sites recording hard coral cover, rubble, sand, and seagrass composition; 648 fisheries pressure monitoring (FPM) records across 12 fishing gear types including shark net, hand line, longline, and reef net; and sightings of endangered, threatened, and protected (ETP) species — 285 shark and 376 ray records across 648 fishing grounds. The dashboard identifies coral restoration priority sites, healthy donor reef clusters for fragment nurseries, and candidate zones for Fishery Replenishment Zone (FRZ) designation, alongside the Mnazi Bay–Ruvuma Estuary Marine Park and the Msangamkuu, Ruvuma Delta, Mnazi Bay, and Mtwara Bay mangrove areas. Field data was collected under the Heshimu Bahari programme (USAID / WCS) and Action For Ocean.
BES survey records, FPM/gear-effort data, ETP sightings, restoration priority scoring and FRZ candidate zones are available on request for research, funding, and management use. Tell us what you need and we'll follow up by email.
